Wastewater pollution is taking toll on Krabi's tourism particularly at PP Island and Ao Nang beach after arrivals of major tourist groups from Scandinavia are declining gradually.
The decline has prompted local tourism authorities and private association to inspect the polluted areas so as to resolve the problem immediately.
Local authorities admitted that there had been complaints by tourists from Scandinavian countries of wastewater pollution at Ao Nang beach to the extent that they were afraid of swimming in the sea because of wastewater and garbages on the beach.
They complained of blackened and smelly wastewater on Ao Nang beach, which during the low tide period would be terrible.
As tourists from Scandinavia have high purchasing power and are quality tourists, their complaints should be treated seriously as their cancellation of visits would hurt the country’s earning.
Local authorities and business operators are now discussing how to better improve the wastewater treatment on the island and garbage disposal.
