Among fruits, blueberries are considered as one of the richest
sources of bioactive compounds that benefit human health and
have protective properties against diseases such as memory loss,
cancer, heart disease, urinary disease, vision problems and ageing
(Shi et al., 2008). They are commercialised in differentways, mainly
in fresh form. However, fresh fruits quickly deteriorate after they
are picked and have a shelf life of less than 2 weeks at 0 C and
90e95% humidity after harvesting. Therefore, seasonal availability
may limit the consumption of fresh berries.
