Individual Uniqueness, Generalizing, and Objectivity
In June 2013, the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs estimated the world population at approximately 7.2 billion. (7,200,000,000) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population)
China has ± 1,4 Billion, India has ± 1,3 Billion, and Thailand ranked at number 20 with ± 67 Million people.
This effectively means that there are approximately 7,200,000,000 unique people in the world, and no one is the same, not even as identical twins. In effect, it means that we have approximately 7,200,000,000 different ‘culturalisms’ because every person is unique with his or her own values, beliefs, thinking, behaviours, etc. A massive undertaking to understand all these people in a global setup! Right, you are not in a global setup, but you are in a community setup; whether it is where you live or stay, work or study, shop or socialize, city or town, province or region, country or ASEAN Community, etc. which you are going to be part of, whether you want to know it or not.
With this known, there is but one conclusion to be made. One cannot generalize; one cannot, under any circumstances, argue that any two people are the same or could be treated or interacted with in the same manner. Even more so when people are from different backgrounds like continent, country, religion, region, etc. Asian cultures cannot be the same, Western cultures cannot be the same; there might be some similarities in Asian cultures, and Western cultures, and Asian and Western cultures, but they are not the same. We often talk about, or say “those two cultures are the same,” but we speak wrong, what we really mean is that there are some similarities—no two cultures can ever be the same!
This then leads to the fact that we need to be open minded, be objective to the differences in the different cultures. We need get better insight and understanding of how others do, behave, think, reason, interact, communicate, etc. There should be mutual respect for these differences, even if we do not agree with it, and the only way this is possible is if there is an understanding of the other culture, and the only way to understanding the other culture is through communication.
