Detection of incipient faults is performed by
monitoring various parameters at substations and at remote
locations of system components, and assessing the
measured and estimated data for abnormalities. The
measured data are electrical and mechanical quantities which
include parameters such as feeder voltages and phase
currents at the substation, temperature of the windings of
transformers, and audible noise of distribution transformers
during operation. Abnormalities are recognized through
comparisons with signatures and discrete levels established
during normal operation of the components. Classification
and location of the fault source is performed by the event
& fault locator. If a component is the source of the fault.
the predictive maintenance functionality is activated to
assess the remaining life of the component and recommend
any required maintenance actions.
