My take from it was, that when he sailed away, he died. Leaving her behind in the world. You see her love for him coming back everyday, the grieving process. Then moving on with her life, but always having those moments where she thinks about him. You never forget the loved ones you lose. Then finally when her time came to pass on, they were reunited again.
However you look at it, it's basically a beautiful look at the loving relationships with your parents and maybe all your loved ones (up to your interpretation), which we can all relate to. Well I hope so anyway. In my mind it's art; metaphorically reflecting something from our lives and world back to us, thereby triggering an emotion. That can be ever so slightly, but can also touch you deeply. That is dependent on each individual.
For me, this triggered an emotional response, giving pause for thought and reflecting on some things in my own life in a positive way. Not dramatically so, but just enough. And that for me, besides the beauty of the movie short itself, made it well worth my while to watch it. For others aswell, going by some comments. But if it didn't, that's ok, hopefully there is other art that does that for you.
