History of Thonburi
In the past, the villager and foreigner called Thonburi was “Bangkok” and in the chronicles (1548 – 1688) it was called “Thonburi Srimahasamhud City”. Thonburi was the Phranakhon river bank and the Thonburi River bank which in the present, it is the plentiful delta plains that name’s “Chaophraya River”. The Chaophraya delta plains distributed around the Chaophraya River since, Nontaburi to Phranakhon in Prachairachatiraj period (1534 - 1546). So, the king had command to dig the canal for weld with Chaophraya River that float indirectly to the Bangkok Noi canal and float out to the Bangkok Yai canal. Thus, Thonburi was born at corner west of the Bangkok Yai canal where is important in strategic city and is the sea outpost city. Thonburi city has trading with aboard that the most flourish in Somdej Pranarai Maharaj (1656-1688). He had command to build the second fortress of the river bank for protect the marine enemy and gave its name that “Wichaiyen fortress”. After that, He had command the French soldiers and the lived at this fortress. And when the king Taksin fight for indepedece successful. So,he had command to renovate Thonburi to be the capital.
