Topical anaesthesia does not provide
complete relief of pain as do various
injection techniques, but there is
comparatively less anxiety and discomfort
during instillation, and it avoids many of
the complications of peribulbar blocks
(Kallio, Uusitalo & Maunuksela 2001). It is
also quick and easy to administer by the
theatre staff, which may have influenced
it's popularity for some surgeons.
