The small sample size limits statistical inference; however, this increase can be clinically
significant, as potential for fewer medication errors exists with increased knowledge.
Testing knowledge of staff at specified follow-up intervals was recommended to determine whether knowledge is sustained over time.
The medication resources and a copy of the DVD education program used for the project were provided to
both nursing homes to help conduct future education. Retesting licensed nursing staff is recommended for future projects and would provide important information about when educational content should be repeated and what information should be repeated to attain sustained knowledge among licensed nursing staff and thus decrease medication errors.
Annual competency training and testing, as suggested by the Masspro program (2007) and as required in North Carolina, may be effective in achieving these goals (Williams et al., 2008).
