I used observational methods to conduct my self-study. Schmuck (1997) writes
that observational methods are essential in self-study, but also warns that observations
bring about limitations when studying one's own practice. The main limitation comes
from wearing two hats. In my case, I had to teach the class and simultaneously research
my practice. Therefore, I could not always sit back and write descriptive notes, as would
an observer or data collector. Instead, I considered myself a full participant, which meant
that taking simultaneous field notes or observational notes was problematic (Mertler,
2006). For that reason and for maximum accuracy, I digitally recorded all my class
sessions.
