2.3 The Potential and Risks of Tourism
As a rule of thumb, one job is created for every eight tourists in southern Africa.
As mentioned earlier, after an increase in the number of international tourist arrivals
even in the year of the financial crisis, Africa can expect average growth of 5
to 6 per cent over the next ten years; this would translate into some 49 million
travellers entering Sub-Saharan Africa by the year 2020. If tourism evolves in accordance
with WTO expectations, over the next ten years the industry will create
an average of some 225,000 additional jobs every year in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This will enable substantial improvements in the people’s living conditions.
