The proposed SA algorithm was tested on an PentiumIII-MMX model PC at 450 MHz (64 MB RAM). The results are first compared with two well-known sample problems from the literature. Then an extensive computational work is carried out with the data set obtained from Balakrishnan and Cheng [14], which contains problems for 6, 15, 30 departments for 5 and 10 periods, respectively. The first comparison is made with the 5-period 2 X 3 facility layout problem of Rosenblatt [5]. The optimum solution for this problem is known and several other researchers also used it. The data for this problem is given in the Appendix. The second comparison is made with a 5-period 3 X 3 facility layout problem given by Conway and Venkataramanan [13]. The data for this problem is also given in the Appendix. The second comparison is made with the data obtained from Balakrishnan and Cheng [14]. The data for this comparison can be obtained from the author. The proposed algorithm is programmed in FRORTAN-90. The FORTRAN-90 code is also supplied in the Appendix where its execution is also shown with another 3-period 2 X 3 facility layout problem.
