Microbial candidates for biosurfactant production are expected to decrease surface tension to around 35mNm

(Desai and Banat, 1997). In our work, we achieved reduction in surface tension to 41mNm
1 with monoculture isolates and a defined consortium.Another approach for screening potential biosurfactant-producing microorganisms is the estimation of the emulsification index (E24). After 24 h, we observed 74% increase in emulsification activity.Most published data on E24 in the literature are reported around 65%. However, a Bacillus subtilis strain displayed E24 values close to 90% (Banat etal., 2000). Thus, we have identified another promising microbial candidate for biosurfactant production.
