Microbial candidates for biosurfactant production are expected to decrease surface tension to around 35mNm1
(Desai and Banat, 1997). In our work, we achieved reduction in surface tension to 41mNm1 with monoculture isolates and a defined consortium.Another approach for screening potential biosurfactant-producing microorganisms is the estimation of the emulsification index (E24). After 24 h, we observed 74% increase in emulsification activity. Most published data on E24 in the literature are reported around 65%. However, a Bacillus subtilis strain displayed E24 values close to 90% (Banat etal., 2000). Thus, we have identified another promising microbial candidate for biosurfactant production.
