eDNA studies of animals have typically targeted mitochondrial
DNA coding segments, including cytochrome b (Piaggio et al.,
2014), 12S rRNA (Deiner and Altermatt, 2014) and COI (Deiner and
Altermatt, 2014). Although so far employed on relatively few taxonomic groups, eDNA screening could theoretically be conducted
for any species that has unique DNA sequences to which primers
can anneal during PCR.
