Multiple administrations of PTZ or flurothyl are also
used to mimic recurrent generalized tonic-clonic seizures in
immature rodents. Flurothyl is a volatile, fast-acting central
nervous system stimulant that causes seizures with myoclonic jerks followed by forelimb clonus, wild running, loss of
posture, and severe tonic posturing.Recovery is very fast,
and the animals exhibit normal behavior within 30 minutes.
Seizures are commonly induced fve times a day over the
course of 5–10 days (usually P0–P9) with intervals of at
least 2 hours. In the PTZ model, seizures are commonly
induced by a single systemic administration, and PTZ can
even induce SE if given in a suffcient amount. Seizurerelated behaviors are also age-dependent. Compared with
P18, P28, and adult rats, P10 animals injected with PTZ have
shorter latency to generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
