The D&M IS Success Model, though published in 1992, was based on theoretical
and empirical IS research conducted by a number of researchers in the 1970s and
1980s. The role of IS has changed and progressed during the last decade. Similarly,
academic inquiry into the measurement of IS effectiveness has progressed over the
same period. We reviewed more than 100 articles, including all the articles in Information
Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, and MIS
Quarterly since 1993 in order to inform this review of IS success measurement. The
purpose of this paper, therefore, is to update the D&M IS Success Model and evaluate
its usefulness in light of the dramatic changes in IS practice, especially the advent and
explosive growth of e-commerce.
