Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp believes that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be able to curb the wild antics of Italian striker Mario Balotelli, if, as expected, the AC Milan forward completes a move to Merseyside.
The 24-year-old has been locked in negotiations with the Merseyside outfit and the transfer is widely believed to be nearing completion after a £16 million fee was agreed, which many believe is good value, despite his unpredictability on the pitch.
Jamie Carragher adamant Mario Balotelli is good value for £16 million
With Kop chief Brendan Rodgers short of options up front following Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona, Balotelli would be a welcome addition to the Anfield outfit’s first team set up.
Meanwhile, a number of odd off the field incidents plagued his career at Manchester City, with Balotelli often attracting headlines for the wrong reasons and he does still represent a risk to Liverpool although he is obviously talented.
Never shy to offer a sound bite, Redknapp was probed regarding the proposed move and he revealed that his own loose cannon Adel Taarabt warned that Balotelli was worse than him on the training ground.
“Balotelli is a fantastic talent. I’ve got a lad here called Adel Taarabt [who was on loan at Milan last season], who’s not the best trainer and hasn’t always got the best attitude, and I spoke to him and he told me, ‘if you think I’m bad, you should see Balotelli!’
“So good luck to Brendan Rodgers! I reckon Steven Gerrard will sort him out,” he insisted.
Gerrard often takes layers under his wing and shows them what is expected of player at Anfield, but whether the former England skipper will be able to put a halt on mad Mario’s antics remains to be seen.
