Striking demographic shifts have
occurred in the population of
individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF)
in the United States (see Table 1).
People with CF are living longer. In
2005, predicted median survival of
patients with CF in the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation Registry was
36.5 years and over 40% of patients
were age 18 or older (Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation, 2005). CF is no longer a
disease managed exclusively by
pediatricians and pediatric nurses.
The CF Foundation, responsible for
accrediting comprehensive CF Care
Centers, strongly recommends
adults with CF receive their care in
age-appropriate settings by adult
