The Bangkok Military Court has approved warrants for the arrest of four men suspected of involvement in a hand grenade explosion at Rama 9 intersection on June 14, and one has already been arrested, according to Pol Maj Gen Amnuay Nimmano.
Pol Maj Gen Amnuay is deputy chief of the Police Education Bureau on temporary duty handling security affairs at the Metropolitan Police Bureau.
The charges relate to the grenade blast at the Rama 9 intersection in Huay Khwang district on June 14 about 7.30am.
Police found at the scene the lever of an RDG5 hand grenade and 12 pieces of shrapnel. Three cars were damaged by the explosion.
The four men named in the warrants are Wichian Tumtaku, 46, of Sa Kaeo province; Charoen Promchart, 38, of Ubon Ratchathani; Kai (real name and surname not known); and Mod (real name and surname also not known).
Wichian is one of the four men seen ithe security camera footage. He was arrested in Huay Khwang area and taken into police custody.
Wichian told the police that he was hired to create a disturbance by another suspect, Charoen, who is still at large.
On June 14, he and Mod went on a motorcycle to the Rama 9 intersection. Mod, the pillion rider, threw the hand grenade at the intersection. The intention was to make people believe that the country was still plagued with violence despite the military takeover, Wichian was quoted as saying.
"Wichian has been arrested. We are looking for the three others," Pol Maj Gen Amnuay said.
