Some additional notes about improving your English skills in general
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many English learners are in a rush to practice their oral conversational skills with native English speakers. This is certainly a good way to practice using English. It is also a very good way to test your English skills.
However, I would generally recommend English learners to spend more of their time focusing on their skills related to THINKING in English and developing their skills to mentally express their thoughts in English (while using proper grammar). Obviously, oral English conversation is one way to do this. However, oral conversation also involves some additional skills.
When having an oral conversation in English, this requires thinking in English and clearly expressing your thoughts in English while also using correct grammar while also using proper pronunication while also using English listening skills.
Additionally, a non-native speaker is often doing these things with a person that is generally more skilled in English, although this other person may use very informal English or they may not be accustomed to speaking with non-native English speakers or with helping non-native English speakers with their English skills.
This can certainly be good practice for your English skills, but it's also doing a lot of things at one time. This makes it a more challenging task and it can be overwhelming or even discouraging or frustrating for some English learners.
I would recommend English learners to spend more time trying to improve each of these skills individually.
Don't misunderstand me though. I am certainly not telling English learners that they shouldn't practice their oral conversational skills by having oral conversations with native English speakers. What I am saying is that when you focus on these things invidually, they will add up. All of these things will improve your conversational skills.
Grammar - To improve your grammar skills, I would recommend that you study English grammar books and English grammar related guides. Additionally, frequently reading English in the form of sources such as books, news or articles will also help to improve your English grammar skills. The reason for this is because that frequent exposure to proper English sentence structures and proper English grammar will become more natural to you over time as you see the same types of patterns over and over again.
Also, an English tutor can definately help you with your grammar skills as well. There are two main reasons why I would recommend having an English tutor. An English tutor is very useful for correcting your grammar mistakes and also for helping you with your pronunciation skills.
Vocabulary - To improve your English vocabulary, I would recommend that you read a lot of English (books, news or articles) or just frequently use English in your life in general. I would also recommend that you keep a journal of new English words that you learn; especially if you think that such words might be useful to you in the future. You could keep such a journal on paper or as a text file or an excel document. If you used an excel document, this could be very practical because you could do things such as sort the words alphabetically or by grammar categorization (noun, verb, adjective, etc.). Or you could also search the document for the translated version of the word in your native language (assuming you entered that information in the document). As your database of vocabulary words grows, you would have an additional resource to study and memorize. You could also do the same thing with English idioms or slang words. In addition to reading, you can also learn new vocabulary words from other resources such as English movies or television shows.
Thought expression - To improve your ability to express your thoughts in English, I would also recommend English learners to spend more time reading English. The more frequently that you read English, the more that it will improve your ability to take your thoughts and put them into structural form with correct English grammar. Improving your English vocabulary and grammar skills will also help with this.
I think that a lot of English learners really underestimate the importance of such things. Many English learner want to just be able to have oral conversations in English or to pass English exams without actually using English a lot in their day to day lives otherwise. I can promise you that if you read in English a lot, it can have a very big impact on increasing your chances of reaching an advanced level of English fluency. I would recommend that you find topics or subjects you are geniunely interested in, and then use English to enjoy or learn about these things.
In addition to these things, I would also recommend that you spend more time thinking to yourself in English. You can think to yourself in English while doing ordinary tasks such as cooking or cleaning at home. Just try to naratate your thoughts in English instead of your native language. You can also talk to yourself out loud while you do these things. This might seem silly, but such things really are good for your English skills.
I would also recommend that you find ways to chat in English online. I would recommend that you spend some time in English/ESL chat rooms or on related websites and make some online friends with other English speakers (either native or non-native English speakers).
You can also use oral chat as a way to improve your English thought expression skills. Anytime you are conversing with someone and you are being put in a position where you are forced to think and respond in English, then you are practicing your English expression skills.
I would also recommend keeping some type of journal or blog in English. This is a good way to practice forming English sentences and expressing your thoughts in English. Write down what you did that day, or new things that you have learned or whatever you are thinking about or feeling. You can have either a public or private blog/journal.
Listening skills - There are many ways to improve your English listening skills. Obviously, music is one good way. English podcasts, or watching English movies or television shows while using English subtitiles are another great way. Additionally, English audio books are a great method for improving your listening skills too. Oral conversation is also a way to improve your listening skills. You can also find English/ESL listening skill excercises online on some ESL related websites. I have provided a link that includes such resources below.
Pronunication skills - Listening skills and pronunication skills are actually closely related. Improving your listening skills will actually improve your pronunication skills. Music is one way to improve your proununciation skills. English music won't always be the most accurate in terms of sounding like spoken English does, but singing can be good for improving your ability to make different sounds with your voice. In the long term, this could actually have an impact on giving your more control your English pronunication and English accent.
One interesting way to improve your pronunication skills would be to use English movies or television shows. I would recommend that you find an English movie that you like, and spend some time repeating some of the dialog in the film. This is a free and effective resource. You might also try shorter resources though such as a shorter video clip on Youtube.
