2.7. Antimicrobial activity of lignin coating solution
The effect of lignin coating solution on growth of A. alternate was
studied using agar plates. A. alternatewas inoculated into the center
of sterilized 9-cm diameter Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) plate.
After 7-days of incubation at 25 C, mycelial propagation of the
tested coating solutionwas determined. Themycelia were grown to
obtain colonies with size of 10e15 mm in diameter. The coating
solutions that contained lignin at levels of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0%
(w/w) were then loaded on the filter paper (10 10 mm, Whatman
No. 1) which rested at the rim of the colony of A. alternate (Yang
et al., 2006). These experiments were replicated two times. The
plates were incubated in an incubator at 25 C and 60e65% relative
humidity and the zones of fungal inhibition around the filter paper
were then monitored for 7 days.
