CDM obligations on the Principal Contractor
The principal contractor has overall responsibility for the management of health and safety during the construction phase.
The principal contractor must ensure that sub-contractors take account of the specific requirements of the project when preparing and presenting tender.
The main responsibilities are as follows:
(a) Co-ordination and evaluations of sub-contractors risk assessments
The principal contractor is responsible for evaluating each sub-contractor risk assessment and health and safety plan, primarily in relation to other sub-contractors.
This role will vary in relation to the seriousness of the risk, the nature of the assessment (generic or sub-contractor specific) and the extent to which one contractor’s work will affect other contractors.
