Laos Green City Company, a newly-opened Chinese joint venture company, is set to develop the potential benefits of solar energy following its official launch in Vientiane on Tuesday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the company’s chairman Cheng Xiaoyang said the idea for opening came from discussions with his friends after experiencing a sunny day in Laos.
“We thought of the potential benefits of solar energy because the country is hot and sunny. That is the reason we decided to invest in the development of alternative energy from wind and solar systems,” he said.
He said the development of solar power in Laos would also be able to provide isolated rural communities away from power grids access to electricity.
“Solar energy will be of great benefit for Green City, everyday people and society as a whole. That’s why we are officially launching the company,” he said.
Currently, Laos is largely dependent on hydropower which is also considered a clean renewable energy source but research and development into solar energy could also support the steady growth of Laos’ socio economic development.
“Traditionally, hydropower has been the main source of energy generation but solar power will also be an alternative energy form. Every country in the world is now looking forward to developing this kind of green energy,” Cheng said.
He added that his company also wanted to develop alongside the rapid growth of the Lao economy.
Meanwhile, the president of the Lao National University of Laos Prof Dr Soukkongseng Saignaleuth said the company had also become an alternative energy research subject for teachers and students.
“The company will also be one of the key elements for socio economic development of Laos when it comes to the research and development of alternative energy,” he said.
Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Dr Boviengkham Vongdara, Xaythany district officials and other invited guests were also present at the opening ceremony.
The office of Laos Green City Company is located at Saphangmeuk village in Xaythany district, Vientiane.
