The final product in this pilot-scale process is lutein oil, not lutein powder as is with the process for T. erecta. Excess organic solvent was stripped from the crude extract, dissolved in 100 mL olive oil under nitrogen(30 min) until a standard accepted by the Food and Drug Administration was achieved. Lutein (100 mL, 5 mg/mL, 70% purity) was obtained. Acetone (20 mL) was then added and the extract was stirred (35 C for 5 min). The acetone was then collected. This process was repeated 3 times or until with a clear extract.
