Therapeutic Management
Therapy for GERD is based on the severity of symptoms and includes early dietary alterations, positional changes, medications, and surgery. Treatment may prevent or lesson complications such as failure to thrive esophagitis, and strictures. Many infants suspected of functional GER are treated conservatively with pharmacologic support. The American Academy of Pediatrics supports the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) positioning guidelines for managing the child with gastroesophageal reflux.
