In Table 12.2 are shown the most used binding agents. Nitrocellulose is one of the most popular binders in gravure and flexographic printing in the packaging industry due to its excellent properties, such as mild odor, alcohol solubility, high heat resistance, and good runnability. It is highly compatible with a large number of different resins and plasticizers, as well as many additives, which makes it possible to make numerous ink series products for different applications. Clean natural resins, such as alcohol-soluble shellac, are only used in a limited amount because of the high and especially fluctuating prices of raw materials, compared with adhesive resins, and other binders, like nitro-cellulose or poly(vinyl butyral) resins.
