have been described in the last decades [3].
The frequency of GDM varies between 3–14 % depending
on the method used for diagnosis and the study
population [4–7]. The magnitude of the risk of postpartum
diabetes depends on the ethnicity, the duration of
follow up and the specific criteria for GDM diagnosis.
Studies have shown that 3–65 % of women with previous
GDM develop type 2 diabetes within 5–16 years after
the index pregnancy [8–13]. When screened 6–12 weeks
postpartum, up to 10 % of women who had GDM were
diagnosed with diabetes and an additional 12–36 % had
impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance
