As a means to further fish production in Ghana, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Italy’s Mazara Del Vallo fish producers.
Officials are confident that the signing will dually serve to enhance relations between Ghana and Italy in the realms of seafood science and technology. Both parties have agreed to participate in and promote the creation of a fishery cluster in Ghana mirrored after the model set by Mazara Del Vallo, according to GhanaWeb.
As the MoU stipulates, fishing ports are to be developed in Ghana; moreover, the agreement allows for the construction and maintenance of fishing boats as well as the construction of mechanical workshops. Both countries will also collaborate in the establishment of equipment stores, and hope to create training programs and research centers that focus specifically on innovation within the fishing sector.
Each party will facilitate contact among private operators in the creation of joint ventures, and will seek public and private funding to get fish farming and fish cluster efforts in Ghana off the ground. The Italians will aid in the identification cluster zones for Ghana to pursue.
Sherry Ayitey , the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, is enthused about what the MoU means for the future of fishery and aquaculture development in the nation, and thanked the people of Mazara and the Italian government for their partnership with Ghana, reported GhanaWeb.
Ayitey and Giovanni Tumbiolo, the President of the District of Mazara Del Vallo, were the representatives on hand who signed the MoU.
