In order to synthesize a complex oligosaccharide or glycoconjugate, the correct selection of the protecting group strategy/manipulation, namely the role of introduction and removal is of primary importance. The success of long, complicated synthetic routes may be disadvantageously influenced or even prevented by the decomposition of the product upon removal of an unfortunatery selected protecting group. At the same time, a good manipulation with the protecting groups may significantly shorten the reaction sequence.
