My name is Dermot from Ireland and over a year ago I met Myrto from the Greek island of Crete on the site. We talked a lot about the history and culture of each other's countries. It was interesting to explain how both Ireland and Greece shared a common modern history ranging from being colonised and occupied, revolutions and uprisings to political turbulence throughout the 20th century. Not to mention that both islands we live on are of similar size.
After adding each other on Facebook around the end of last year I suggested that we meet up in her hometown of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete. She was happy and offered to show me around her part of Crete.
It was in early August that we met up at the bus terminal in Heraklion, and we did so for the majority of my two weeks on the island.
During this time our families also got to know each other as we met up on a couple occasions which included a lunch on the 15th of August, an important religious feast day in Greece.
The two weeks I spent with Myrto was the best holiday I've had and this is why I'm looking forward to going again in 2016.
