The term renaissance ( French for rebirth) is drawn from a conception of history found in
the writings of the 16th century Italian painting, architect and writer Giorgio.

The concept of humanism had a profound philosophical foundation. Humanism was integrated with Christianity; it sought to supplement faith by insisting on the dignity of the individual and the human potential for achievement.

- Mannerism
Mannerist art was not intended to appeal to a mass audience. The works of Michelangelo and Raphale provided a starting point for the Mannerists who developed selected ideas and forms to achieve a stylized artificial elegance.
