Because I don't take any prescription drugs, I asked my contact at PillPack if the company could send some dummy samples of the packets, perhaps filled with candies. PillPack did me one better and sent me some OTC vitamins and supplements. Available OTC supplements include multivitamins, fish oil, melatonin, and so forth. Poking around the site, I noticed that the prices of many of these OTC pills were quite reasonable. To add a generic, once-a-day 1,000 IU vitamin D3 tablet costs only $0.83 per month. I also had an option of ordering the same vitamin D3 pill in a separate bill bottle (i.e., not in packets) at the price of $3.32 for 112 pills. Prices vary by brand and type of OTC drug, of course. A One-A-Day Women's 50+ Advantage (multivitamin) runs $4.20 per month on PillPack. By comparison, you can buy a 4-month supply of the same multivitamin in a bottle for around $14 to $18, which works out to be around the same monthly cost.
You do need to enter a credit card into a PillPack account before you can even peruse the available vitamins and supplements, however. And you can't pull up a comparative list of prices for, say, all the possible brands of a certain vitamin you might buy. You can only see the cost one medication at a time.
From your online account, you can manage and check on your prescriptions, order more OTC drugs, and update your billing, shipping, and insurance information. I'm still surprised that PillPack doesn't charge a thing for its service or shipping. And with health insurance, it's possible that your pill bill will only be a co-pay.
PillPack works with your doctors to refill your prescriptions before they run out, too, and there's an online chat and phone number to call whenever you need assistance. I've also heard from customer service reps via email. The company does not, as of this writing, have any mobile apps for the service, though.
Each dispenser box measures 6 by 3.25 by 6 inches (HWD) and has a list of your medications on the back with their details, including the shape, size, and color of each pill. And before you tsk-tsk PillPack for having a wastefully large box, let me point out that it's recyclable, with a note on the bottom indicating you can sort it with bottle and cans. I also love that the front panel is clear so you can see your next upcoming packet, too.
PillPack is a wonderful and convenient service for getting prescription and non-prescription medications shipped to your door and doled out in packets, making it easier for you to manage your health. Anyone who takes several prescription pills a day should look into it. PillPack is an Editors' Choice health service.
