Bruges experiences a temperate climate however it is a much colder and wetter climate when compared to other European cities in countries such as Holland, France and Germany (the neighbouring countries to Belgium). The weather tends to be damp all year round with temperatures in the summer rarely exceeding 21 degrees Celsius.
There are also limited hours of sunshine experienced in Bruges due to the climate, most days being cloudy, miserable with rain or dark and cold in the winter.
Summer
The summer sees temperatures around 18 degrees Celsius, with a high of 21 degrees Celsius rarely being reached. The days do have some sun, but visitors to Bruges should always come prepared for cooler temperatures and wet weather.
The average rainfall per month during the summer is around 8 inches and the weather is mostly cloudy.
Winter
Winter in Bruges often sees snow falling and it is not uncommon to wake up to see the ground covered in frost. Though the colder weather may not be to everyone’s liking, the city does benefit from the added beauty of the snow that makes the romantic architecture seem even more so.
The cold weather is punctuated by rain as well as snow and the dark days mean that the best time to see Bruges is during the long winter nights when they are lit up by the lights that hung throughout the city.
