Milk composition (fat, protein, and lactose, determined by infrared spectroscopy with a Bentley 2000 mid-infrared milk analyzer; Bentley Instruments Inc., Chaska, MN) and SCC (determined by flow cytometry with a Somacount 300 instrument; Bentley Instruments Inc.) were analyzed by a certified DHIA laboratory (Burlington, WA). Energy-corrected milk yield was calculated as (milk yield, kg/d × 0.327) + (milk fat, kg/d × 12.86) + (milk protein, kg/d × 7.65) and 3.5% FCM was calculated as (milk yield, kg/d × 0.4324) + (milk fat, kg/d × 16.2162) according to Davidson et al. (2008)
