Challenge
Money may help intrinsically motivated employees create more interesting work. Suppose that a sales representative wants to increase the challenge and variety of his job. He might establish financial targets that exceed his company's quota so that he has to learn new skills, interact with customers in novel ways, and meet new people. He might ask himself, "If 'usual' behaviors will lead to achieving quota, what 'unusual' behaviors must I exhibit to achieve financial goals that are well beyond quota"? Although money is not the end in itself, it can serve to create more fun, interest, and challenge in the work itself.
