This sheep-like browser from the Oligocene Epoch, some
30 million years ago, had a mixture of features reflecting
pigs and camels. It also had a body shape reminiscent of a short-legged early horse, but with four toes on each foot. It has also been known as Oreodon, meaning mountain tooth', after the
region where its early fossils were found. Merycoidodon
gave its name to a group of similar plant-eaters that were
successful in North America during the Oligocene Epoch.
They ev-olved into various forms, including squirrel-like tree-climbers and bulky, hippo-shaped swamp- dwellers. However, the group declined during the Miocene and became extinct soon after.
