Interviews also revealed that social and cultural capital are enriched through tourism participation at both villages, because engagement in tourism encourages communications and networking activities. Residents' social networks have expanded through their business relations with travel agencies, tour guides, website operators, other business suppliers and tourists. Moreover, as a family based tourism business, Yujiale operation has strengthened families, the basic social unit, by retaining young people at home, thus enhancing connections within families. For example, the tourism season overlaps with the summer vacation, and it was observed that many university students of fishing families return to be involved in tourism operations during their vacations. This enhances communications and mutual understanding among family members. University students from the local area not only meet occasional labor requirements, but also contribute their intelligence and knowledge gained in cities to the development of Yujiale tourism at home.
