One way to identify philosophical orientation is to ask: What are the most important goals of adult education? Goals can be identified at societal, institutional, instructional, and individual levels. Examples of societal goals include the need for social change, the need for the development or use of new technology, or the need to address social problems and issues. Examples of institutional goals include expanding or retrenching the organization and adapting to a changing organizational environment. Instructional goals are those specified as the desired learning outcomes of a course, workshop, or learning activity. At the individual level, goals which lead to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes, career advancement or change; personal development; and escape are often identified.
