Encapsulation technology, as a novel approach, has drawn increasing
attention for its applications in the pharmaceutical industries, with
the purpose to protect labile compounds from deteriorative conditions
[13], as well as providing controlled release and targeted delivery [14].
The encapsulation process mainly involves immobilizing particular
compounds in a material that coats it or in which it is dispersed. Recently,
electrospraying (ES) or electrohydrodynamic (EHD) methods have
attracted considerable interests for the encapsulation of bioactive
compounds [15]. The process uses electrostatic forces to draw polymer
solutions from a spinneret towards a grounded collector, by exposing
the solution under an electric field. As the polymer solution travels in
the air, repulsion of charges can cause the polymer to stretch into fibers
or beads through the control of the properties of polymer solution and
processing parameters [16].
