exploresindividualbehaviourchangeandengagementinbuildinglowcarboncommunitiesinChina
through acasestudylookingatthebuildingofalowcarboncampusatFudanUniversity,Shanghai.
Individual behaviourdirectlyinfluences theoverallenergyconsumptionandcarbonemissionsonFudan
University’s campus.Eventhoughrelevantpoliceshavebeenissuedforenergyconservation,theenergy
consumption increasedby5%everyyear,whichsuggeststhatthe “top-down” approachtellingstudents
and staff “what todo” does notworkeffectively.Basedonacomprehensivemethodwhichincludesthe
individual andsocialaspectsrelatedtotheenergybehaviour,theresearchanalysesthepromotionof
individual engagementinbuildingalowcarboncampusthroughbehaviourchangebasedonfourmain
aspects: (1)awarenessraisingandbehaviourforming;(2)approachestoencouragebehaviourchange;
(3) beyondthebarriersandtheconstraints;and(4)systemsandmechanismsforthelong-term
engagement. Alowcarbonmanagementsystemisproposedfornotonlyaddressingmanagementand
technical solutionsattheuniversitylevel,butalsobasedonthecontributionsfrombehaviourchangesin
establishing alowcarboncampusatFudanUniversityattheindividuallevel.
