The best solution to the problem of effluent is to reuse it, or recycle it. For example, with smaller treatment plants, the effluent can be infiltrated or used to irrigate farm fields, golf courses, or tree nurseries (Figure 2.70). In some cases it is practicable to use greater quantities of effluent. Irrigation use would be most appropriate for areas with low rainfall and nutrient-poor soils, which restrict horticulture and agriculture.
