Counselors should encourage parents to schedule a meeting with the child’s teacher after the first few months of preschool to share any concerns and to inquire if the child is on track with development when compared to other children. In the United States, the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) is a federal law that requires appropriate services be provided for children with disabilities. Infants and toddlers, from birth to 25 months, receive early intervention services under IDEA Part C, while children ages 3 to 21 receive services under IDEA Part B (U.S. Department of Education, n.d.). Public school districts provide screening and assessment for developmental delays so that early intervention can begin.
