The determination of VOCs from soil samples is hampered by
the complexity of the matrix and the trace-level concentrations
and high volatility of the compounds in question. These character-
istics mean that the extraction of the compounds from soils is the
most critical step of the whole analytical method. Classical extrac-
tion procedures such as Soxhlet extraction [10–12] and liquid–solid
extraction [10,11] have been applied to this type of analysis, but
these techniques are time-consuming and often require the use of
large amounts of solvent.
