Introduction
Silk fibers are known for their high strength and elongation, good moisture sorption and luster and are therefore preferred for various applications. Traditionally, silk fibers have been extracted from B. mori (mulberry) cocoons and to a relatively small extent from the wild silks A. mylitta (Indian tasar), A. pernyi (Chinese tasar) and P. ricini (Eri) belonging to the Saturniidae family. Although B. mori silk (fibroin) has been extensively used for medical applications, considerable efforts are also being made to use non-mulberry fibroin for medical applications [1], [2], [3], [4] and [5]. Fibroins from mulberry and non-mulberry silks have been used in their natural form to develop films and electrospun fibers for various applications [6], [7], [8], [9], [10] and [11]. Attempts are also being made to use non-bioengineered silk fibroin for potential medical applications [12], [13] and [14]. Similarly, silk fibroins have been regenerated and also developed from recombinant proteins to develop films and fibers [15] and [16].
