2. Purpose
The seven studies reviewed provide convincing evidence that the number of individuals identified with ASD will decrease
using DSM-5 versus DSM-IV criteria. The DSM-5 Neurodevelopmental Disorders Work Group (APA, 3/27/12) criticized
McPartland et al. (2012), arguing that the presence or absence of DSM-5 symptoms cannot be determined with archival data (i.e.,
the 1994 DSM-IV field trial data and the symptom checklist used in the study). Some of the other studies also used retrospective
data. Therefore, it is important for clinical researchers to prospectively study the impact of the DSM-5 on ASD diagnoses. Some
authors (Gibbs et al., 2012; Matson, Hattier, et al., 2012) note the need for future research to determine the percentage of children
with ASD not meeting DSM-5 ASD criteria who instead meet DSM-5 criteria for social communication disorder.
