The clinician should gain the patient's consent to ask a few questions. A victim of trafficking likely is nervous and hesitant to offer any information. Maintaining a conversational style of speech, the clinician should discuss the patient's chief complaint. Most likely, he or she visited the dentist to seek relief from pain. The dentist should not delve into a series of questions, as in an interrogation. The goal of the conversation is not to understand the patient's entire life story, but to determine if he or she is a probable victim of trafficking.
