Bacillus(Lactobacillus) laevolacticus produces D-lactic acid at a yield of 97% from 50 kg m of glucose
in a chemostat culture at pH 6.0 (De Boer et al., 1990). Lactobacillus bulgaricusLb-12 produces 40 kg m of D-lactic acid from 100 kg m of lactose monohydrate at pH 6.0. The strain consumes only the glucose moiety of lactose (Benthin and Villadsen, 1995).
