In the summer of 2002, Rogers Marvel
Architects was invited to compete for a mandate
to study security issues at Battery Park City.
Approaching what was presented as a technical
problem from a design perspective, the firm was
awarded the commission. Since that time, the
team has examined the issue of security from a
range of perspectives—from a child crossing the
overly wide boulevards of the neighborhood to
get to the newly constructed ball park, to the
increasing standoff distances around important
financial market facilities, to the national economy.
