Millions of people, both Thais and foreign tourists, took part in last night's Loy Krathong festivities around the country.
This year, most of the floating baskets, or "krathong" as they are known here, were made of natural, biodegradable materials and many families floated only one krathong to put less of a burden on the environment.
The centre of attention in the late afternoon was the Chao Phraya River outside of Siriraj Hospital where the krathongs (actually "Phra Pratheep" in the royal language) of His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen were floated by palace officials. (Photo by Seksan Rojjanametakul)
One popular place for tourists was Nakrapirom Park on Maharat Road in Bangkok near the Grand Palace. There, tourists could learn to make their own krathongs and, of course, join in with the locals in floating them. (Park photos by Wichan Charoenkiatpakul)
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha and his wife, Naraporn, floated their krathongs in Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem near the Government House. Officials were close by making sure they didn't fall in.
The canal has received a big facelift over the past year and is now a popular place for tourists and locals, including these cute twins seen last night. (Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem photos by Thanarak Khunton)
Another area of the city that has changed almost beyond recognition in recent months in the Saphan Lek area along Khlong Ong Ang. Gone is the congested and less thanlegal market and people can now walk unobstructed next to the newly-cleaned canal. It was a popular place for floating krathongs last night. As the night went on, more and more krathongs filled the waterways and in some areas, like the small lake at Chulalongkorn University, it was hard to find an openspace. City cleaning staff have a big job this morning.(Chulalongkorn photos by Patipat Janthong)
