The story takes place on a fictional Greek island. Sophie had always wanted to know who her father was, but her mother, Donna, wouldn't mention the past. Sophie read her mother's diary and found that Donna mentioned having an intimate relationship with three men. Sophie thought one of the three men must have been her father, who sent everyone her wedding invitation, but didn't tell her mother. The three men are Harry, Bill, Sam, and they each have their own characteristics. Harry is an angry bank clerk, laughing wackyly; Bill is a typical Australian; and Sam is an architect who is a woman when he is in love with Donna. In addition, Donna and Tanya: a rich man who had been married three times and divorced three times and Rosie: an old girl who had never been married and loved to play with love formed a choir.

At first, Sophie thought Bill was her father because he had an aunt named Sophia who had left a large inheritance to his family. Donna often says that Sophie's name comes from "Sophia" and that the money they use to open a small restaurant is said to come from a legacy. She asked Bill to lead her in at the wedding, and he agreed. Soon, Harry and Sam guessed what was going on, and they found Sophie, who felt they were qualified to lead Sophie to the wedding.

Sophie wrote to all three, telling them that she didn't have to lead her into the room because Donna could do it. When it came to the wedding, Sophie and her fiance suddenly realized that they didn't really want to get married. Instead of canceling the wedding, however, Sam and Donna got married. At the same time, it was discovered that Rosie and Bill had fallen in love.
