The Voice Air Pollution
Research seeks to answer questions but in doing so often poses more. Like looking through
a microscope, a scenario that at first seems simple, under greater focus is revealed as a convoluted
structure of interrelated issues. Take air pollution, as scientists probe into this subject new aspects of
pollution emerge and to really understand these, a myriad of inter related factors need exploring. This
issue of TPI News looks at two facets of air pollution, the link between weather conditions and air
pollution incidences, and pollution and health.
Good policy is key to changing behavior and reducing the impact of air pollution on health.
To formulate this a detailed knowledge of the complex interactions of weather conditions, pollution
and health is needed. This calls on the knowledge and collaboration of a large range of individuals
with skills in chemistry, meteorology, medical expertise and a range of specialisms in between. These
research teams can establish recommendations but rely on another set of experts with an understanding
of social, legal and policy issues to take these forward and implement the necessary policy change.
The TPI News special feature highlights the wealth of expert air pollution research conducted
in Britain and identifies some really exciting projects where individuals with a range of specialisms
are working together. This work successfully puts scientific knowledge into practice to fundamentally
improve the air we breathe. In all these projects collaboration is considered key; the British teams link
to air pollution work in many cities, for instance Athens, Bangkok, Sao Paulo and Mexico City. They
are always looking for new opportunities to collaborate with local organisations, to share knowledge
and jointly improve air quality for all.
We hope the TPI News introduces you to some novel technologies you to some novel
technologies and inspires you with the opportunities for new international collaborations
